Enviga

Nestlé Enviga is a carbonated green tea drink marketed as a weight-loss aid. This joint venture between The Coca-Cola Company and Nestlé promised a way to burn calories, a claim that landed them in hot water.

The Enticing (But Unproven) Promise

Enviga boasted a unique blend of caffeine and EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate), an antioxidant found in green tea. The companies claimed this combination would boost metabolism and increase calorie burning. However, the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) filed a lawsuit against Coca-Cola and Nestlé, accusing them of deceptive marketing. They argued that Enviga's calorie-burning claims were "fraudulent," lacked scientific backing, and were misleading to consumers.

CSPI stated that their scientists reviewed studies used by Coca-Cola and Nestlé and found them insufficient to support the calorie-burning claims.

Coca-Cola and Nestlé eventually settled the lawsuit and dropped the calorie-burning claims associated with Enviga.
