M12 (formerly Microsoft Ventures) is Microsoft's corporate venture capital arm and maintains a dedicated Tel Aviv office to oversee Israeli investments.
Israeli Tech Ecosystem Investments
M12 has made at least 21 investments in Israeli companies. The fund's Israeli operations are staffed by Unit 8200 veterans.
AnyVision Surveillance Investment
In June 2019, M12 invested in AnyVision, which is a facial recognition technology powered a secret Israeli military surveillance project throughout the West Bank, nicknamed "Google Ayosh" internally. The system used thousands of cameras deployed throughout occupied territories to place Palestinians under constant surveillance.
Microsoft divested from AnyVision in 2020 following pressure from BDS campaigns and internal employee protests. However, Microsoft continues to offer AnyVision's facial recognition product on its Azure Marketplace.
Team8 Investment
M12 is an investor in Team8, the Israeli venture firm founded by Unit 8200 veterans including. M12 participated in Team8's $85 million funding round alongside Walmart, Airbus, and SoftBank. Microsoft continued backing Team8 through its $500 million 2024 fundraise during the genocide in Gaza.
Team8's portfolio companies include surveillance and cybersecurity firms staffed by Unit 8200 veterans, creating a pipeline from Israeli military Microsoft.
Airobotics Investment
In 2017, M12 (then Microsoft Ventures) invested in Airobotics. Airobotics develops autonomous surveillance drones for "homeland security" applications.
